HUD Mixed-Status Housing Rule Comment Letter

This comment letter was submitted to the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in response to a proposed rule it released on May 10, 2019, that would make changes to the "verification of eligible status” for families living in public housing and participating in Section 8 programs.

If finalized, this rule would effectively evict 25,000 immigrant families from their homes, including over 55,000 children who are eligible for housing assistance under federal law.

In response to this proposal, Prosperity Now's letter outlines the harms that would come from it if it were to be finalized and urges that the rule be withdrawn in its entirety. In addition, the letter also calls for HUD’s long-standing regulations that would be changed under this proposal to remain in effect.

Read Prosperity Now's comment letter to learn more about why this proposed rule would be harmful for so many “mixed-status" immigrant families living in public housing and participating in Section 8 programs.
