January Jobs Report Shows Resilience, but Uneven Recovery Persists

WASHINGTON, D.C. — On Friday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 143,000 in January [LINK], which is below the forecast of 169,000. The unemployment rate declined slightly to 4%. Although job growth was below expectations, the overall labor market remains robust, with no immediate recession concerns. This report also suggests that a March interest rate cut by the Federal Reserve is less likely. Job gains were noted in health care, retail trade, and social assistance, while declines were observed in mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction.

“As we move into 2025, the January jobs report is signaling economic uncertainties in the U.S. labor market,” said Marisa Calderon, President and CEO of Prosperity Now. “The impacts of forthcoming adjustments in taxation, trade, immigration, and workforce regulation remain to be seen and will likely influence the labor market’s path in the coming months.”

A recent BLS report indicated that, on a year-over-year basis, December’s unemployment rates increased in 266 of the 389 metropolitan areas, decreased in 95 areas, and remained unchanged in 28 areas. In addition, 85 metropolitan areas reported jobless rates below 3%, while eight areas had rates of at least 8%.

“This varied recovery across regions reflects ongoing challenges, particularly in communities where resources are more limited,” added Calderon. "It highlights the importance of supporting local small businesses and considering policies that help promote broad-based economic opportunity.”
