WASHINGTON, D.C. — On Friday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that the U.S. labor market continued to expand at a steady pace last month, adding 151,000 jobs in February, modestly higher than the 143,000 jobs added the previous month [LINK]. The unemployment rate ticked up to 4.1% from 4% in January, while average hourly earnings grew by 0.3% in February, following a 0.4% increase in January. While this data reflects a stable labor market, several indicators suggest potential challenges ahead.
The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index fell to 98.3 in February, marking its lowest level since June 2024 and its sharpest monthly drop since August 2021.
“Consumer confidence is slipping as pessimism about jobs, business conditions, and future income grows,” said Marisa Calderon, President and CEO of Prosperity Now. “When workers doubt their ability to find new jobs, it affects the entire economy—including employers’ willingness to hire. With tariffs looming and economic uncertainty mounting, working families across the nation are bracing for tougher times.”
This report offers a look at the economy ahead of the full impact of the tariffs against Mexico, China, and Canada. These trade policies are expected to contribute to rising unemployment and have long-term consequences beyond immediate price increases. They pose a significant risk to economic advancement, particularly for small businesses—the backbone of our economy. Higher operating costs from tariffs can stifle expansion, limit innovation, and hinder opportunities in communities with limited access to resources.
“Our elected leaders must consider the real-world impact of trade policies on American families,” continued Calderon. “Economic policies should do more than protect markets—they must support the people who drive them: working families, small businesses, and communities striving for financial security. America’s economic strength is rooted in the resilience of its people, not tariffs. Let’s ensure their needs remain central in our policymaking.”
